holiday baking magazines - exactly the same both years

i have a problem where if i see a baking recipe magazine at the checkout counter, i cannot walk past it without buying a copy…so much so that i have accidentally bought the same one twice, and ended up giving it to my mom, sister, or friend because you can’t really return magazines. well, this time, i didn’t buy the same one twice– at least not in the same sense that i have before; this one definitely had a different cover. to be fair, i should have thumbed through to see if it was new recipes, but who would have thought better homes and gardens would be trying to rip us bakers off by putting out the EXACT same publication twice, just with a new cover. as you will see below, it really is exactly the same cookies on exactly the same pages, with exactly the same table of contents! reminds me a bit of my fellow foodie blogger & spoon sister sarah’s conspiracy theory post about how magazines use the same cover ideas and articles over and over hoping that nobody notices…holiday baking magazines - exactly the same both yearsexact same recipes - duplicate magazines

oh my goodness–that is ridiculous!! i have the same holiday magazine problem, but this year tried really hard not to buy w/out flipping through them. hilariously–i actually bought this issue that you featured twice last year and gave one away on the blog! thanks for the shout-out, and for saving me the cost of another duplicate!

I got caught on this one as well. I have learned through the past years to watch the BH&G Special Interest Publications and to look for tiny words on the cover telling me it was a reprint. Those tiny words have been easy to miss. This current issue had not only a different cover, but a different title, so I assumed it was an all new magazine. With that said, what cookies have been baked out of this magazine that were well liked?

sarah- happy to know that i saved you from this trap! and i got a good giggle out of you having to give one away last year as well! if i already gave the “old” one to my mom last year, perhaps i should give the “new” one away on here!

becky- sorry to hear you fell victim to this, too! some of my favorites from this are the orange-fig pillows (pg 30) that i made with raspberry orange instead, shortbread brownies (they are the second ones my the post, pg 96 in the book)…but my favorite bh&g recipe i think would be oatmeal cream pies, but i forget which of the publications it was in– luckily i posted the recipe!

  4. oh bummer! this is exactly why i don’t buy magazines usually :)

Wow. Thanks for the info. I buy the magazines all the time at the register. I am afraid to look at my collection of cookie featured magazines as I bet I have fallen victim to this many times. From now on, I will flip thru the pages to see if they look familiar before buying. Did you bring it the attention of the magazine? Thanks again.
