i will admit to being proud of my cookies. my scones are delightful. my cupcakes are great. my cakes… my cakes are disasters. if there wasn’t already a wildly popular site called cakewrecks, i would consider creating a section on my site with that name. let me tell you about my weekend, which resulted in putting flowers on a cake for my friend ed, a 40 year old male.
this past sunday, my kitchen and i were attacked by a moose. wait, no… a mousse. but we were attacked, i assure you of this. i considered taking some photos of the mess, but the lighting in my kitchen isn’t so great, and i would rather concentrate on how magnificent this cake is. i wish i had recorded the reactions it received, but since i did not, i suggest that you make this cake for the next special occasion (yes, today sounds like a day worth celebrating to me) and hear them for yourself! although some of the remarks were “heavenly,” “melt in your mouth good,” “if awesome had a taste, this would be it,” etc… the best reactions were the ones that were noises rather than words. it is the biggest compliment to me as a recreational baker when people accuse me of purchasing at a bakery!

as you may have gathered, i like a lot of the folks i work with…good peoples, i tell’ya. there are, however, some that really stand out– one of the absolute sweetest people i have ever met celebrated her birthday last week, but since we were at conference, we shall celebrate on monday. so, happy birthday, sherrin! you truly are an amazing, strong, caring, hard-working gal who deserves amazing things! since this is a cake, and i can’t very well slice into it in advance without ruining it, i am really hoping that this cake is amazing…

good friends + good food + good weather + good games = recipe for a great day!
-whew- having company over is a lot of work, especially if you are one of those do-it-all-yourself type people! yes, that means i am one of them. friday i made two cold pasta dishes: penne with tomatoes and fresh basil, and rotini with veggies in a vinaigrette; blueberry oat bars, vanilla as well as chocolate cupcakes with various icings, marinated the portobellos, brewed iced green tea, squeezed fresh lemonade, and

they say better late than never, and this statement applies twice-over when it comes to baked goods! may was full of birthdays. i am not exaggerating here… my dad was the first, brother in law the 2nd, childhood friend the 3rd, good friend/ex-boyfriend the 4th, step brother the 5th, so on and so forth… there were about four days without any birthdays i was aware of. i know i wanted to bake for jeremy (the good friend/ex)’s birthday, but a ton of stuff came up and i wanted to find the perfect recipe. we used to sit down and devour entire packages of peanut butter chocolate cookies, so i wanted to head in that direction, but i did not want to repeat cookies i have made him before, nor send him a dud.

it was birthday time on my team again– this time for kevin, who runs eleet music, so the logical cake choice for him was music-related. i considered one that was shaped like a musical note, but i realized that since i don’t have a pan shaped like that i would be cutting from a half-sheet, which would result in less cake. and around here, we like more cake! i went with what i thought was the next best thing, decorating a cake with a bar of “happy birthday to you”. when i was looking up the sheet music, i found that no two were identical (different keys, etc), so i just picked one. turns out that i still can’t decorate a cake very well…but it’s the thought that counts. right…? i hope so.

ok, so as you know, i bake for the birthdays of my employees. i try to make them all as individualized as i can, like lauren’s gigundo poptart or andy’s zombie cupcakes. so when carlos’ birthday came up i knew i had to do something around the yankees since he is a die-hard fan. i thought about shaping a cake into the yankees logo, or putting a baseball diamond on top of a cake… but then i remembered that i kinda stink at that sort of thing. i am a good baker and a mediocre decorator; as you can see in the pictures here, i couldn’t even get the icing smooth- tho i am letting myself off the hook because i used marshmallow fluff icing, which is much harder to spread.

as i began my baking process this morning i realized something– if i were to end up settling down with a guy who is allergic to peanut butter, we are going to need separate kitchens. i just don’t think i could get by without eating nor baking with it. this morning i prepared the insides for peanut butter chocolate cookies i will be making later, and got started on the fluffernutter cupcakes. then, around 11, i headed off for something that has had me an odd shade of excited.

this past week has been a little insane, so my plans to post during the week just didn’t happen. then, i cancelled the photo/video shoot that i had planned for yesterday– my dad is in the hospital so i didn’t know if there would be any emergencies, and since my mom was leaving today, i decided it was the right thing to do to cancel the shoot and spend some time with her. the ironic thing is that while sitting on my grandmother’s couch with her she explained to me that she was going through withdrawal from me not having any new blog posts for a week. i will tellya, i had some fun things planned for the shoot, so i sure hope i get to do it soon! i will admit though that spending some time with mom and going for a relaxing shea butter swedish massage sure was a nice way to spend a saturday!
