i have to confess… i cheated. that’s right, i said it. i cheated.
my mom is in town this week, and after work i am tired…and, well, there was so much to do with this cake that i just didn’t think i would have time. i know, not very good excuses, but i am using them to justify a boxed cake mix. i know there is nothing wrong with it from time to time, but i try to only do it when necessary, or when modifying the heck out of it (such as biscotti from quickbread mix). in any case, i still have to be a little proud of this one.
in my head, i imagined it a little different, but the basics were there. i started with a giant cake sized cupcake, which i hollowed out:
i then filled it with peanutbutter icing and crushed reese’s pb cups:
then a layer of chocolate cake:
next, a layer of peanutbutter chocolate icing, then more crushed reese’s, then more icing to hold the top on:

then, a chocolate cake for the top. since sean and i are major lost junkies, i decided to go with a dharma logo. i was going to go with a real dharma station, but i decided to make it more personalized by using “spla” which is decidedly an awful acronym with a fun sound to make, that happens to be the microsoft program that he supports in his job. for those of you (yes, you david) who don’t understand why i did not use the top that came with this pan… it is spiraled, conical, and tall. not good for drawing a design such as this. then again, i didnt exactly do a great job of drawing the design, and my ganache did not come out exactly as i planned (i like to get creative sometimes, so i decided to wing it instead of using one of my recipes). in any case, this thing was pretty insane, and i am a little concerned that this will be a candidate for this is why you’re fat.
i am super glad that it did not fall apart when sliced! -whew-

My birthday cake was the bomb. And if you need proof, it got devoured by the hyenas in this department double quick.
I’ll bet Jim LaFleur AKA: Sawyer never got a cake like this for his birthday!
